After a rough start to this season the New Paltz Hawks have fought back and turned their season around. After starting out 3-11 the Hawks have won seven out of their last eight games and have gotten their record to 10-12. The Hawks have been on a roll lately sweeping the number two team in the conference last year, Brockport, two weekends ago and then sweeping a promising Oswego team this year, this past weekend. While things look bright for the Hawks things will only get tougher as they will travel to Fredonia, and Oneonta and then play at home for their SUNYAC finale against Plattsburgh.

The SUNY New Paltz Baseball team will be traveling up to SUNY Fredonia to start a key three game series. New Paltz currently is 6-4 in the conference while Fredonia trails New Paltz with a 4-2 record. With a series win this weekend New Paltz can solidify themselves as being a true contender in the SUNYAC and move closer to a playoff birth. In their matchup last year Fredonia took the series on New Paltz home field. The Hawks will look to return the favor this year as the first game is set for 3 PM Friday at Fredonia.

Weekend Recap

The first weekend of games are in the books for the New Paltz Hawks who went 1-2 in their first action of the season. The Hawks won their first game of the season against Baruch College before losing two in a row, once to Hampden-Sydney and then to Rutgers-Camden. While New Paltz's pitching lead the way during the weekend, the offense struggled in the beginning stages of the season. "It is early yet, the hitters look a little timid at the plate, they have to get that "killer mentality"up there, once they do that there's no telling what we can do," says pitching coach Zach Potter.

The Hawks started off the season by beating Baruch College at Silver Lake Park in Purchase, New York, by the score of 2-0. The Hawks rallied behind Chris Chismar's stellar fifteen strikeout performance in only six innings of work, due to a pitch count restriction this early in the season. After a long nine hour bus ride the Hawks arrived in Virginia very early Saturday morning. With a quick turnaround they took the field against Hampden-Sydney, who had already played fourteen games prior to there matchup with New Paltz. The Hawks would lead the entire game only to watch their lead of 2-0 slip away in the late innings of the game. A wild pitch on an intentional walk would score the game tying run in the seventh inning, a single would then score the go ahead run from second to put Hampden-Sydney up 3-2. They would end up winning the game 6-2.

In the Hawks next matchup, against Rutgers-Camden, they would rally to tie the game at three apiece in the top of the eighth, only to watch the game take a turn in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs Rutgers-Camden tried to steal second base, but the runner was thrown out by senior catcher Matt Kaldon. As the Hawks trotted of the field after what seemed to be the final out of the inning they were called back out to the field by the umpire, who had called a balk move on the pitcher. With the go-ahead run at second, Rutgers-Camden took the lead on a bloop single over, shortstop Steve Morse's head, and eventually won the game.

"We saw some things we definitely liked this weekend and some things we have to work on during this weeks upcoming practice. It's early in the season and nothing to get down about. We need a good productive and focused week at practice and then be ready to take it to Salisbury University this weekend," said senior captain Matt Carr.

2013 Baseball Preview

The SUNY New Paltz Baseball team will begin their first game action on February 22nd at Silver Lake Park, in Purchase New York against Baruch College. After the game they will begin their journey to Virginia, where they will play against Hampden-Sydney and Rutgers-Camden on that Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

The Hawks have been training since February 4th and are eagre to get their season underway. The Hawks will face a tough schedule this year facing the number nine ranked team in the nation, Salisbury University, March 3rd and 4th in Maryland, the number four ranked team SUNY Cortland March 22nd and 23rd, and other nationally mentioned teams, SUNY Old Westbury, William Patterson University, Ithaca College, and SUNY Brockport. "With a tough in region games this year on the schedule, it is going to show how good we are and what we are made of," says Junior Pitcher Mike Pastorino, "We are definitely going to be battle tested within the first couple weeks of the season and see if we have what it takes to compete with the top teams in the nation."

The Hawks will look to improve on their season last year after finishing in last place. The Hawks started off strong, but lost 11 out of their final 14 games going 3-11. March 22nd will be the Hawks first home game of the season as well as their conference opener against SUNYAC rival Cortland.
"After a down year and not making the playoffs last year, it gives us more motivation to get back to becoming a championship level caliber team," says Captain Dave Lostaglio. With ten seniors returning for their last season and five All-Conference Players returning the Hawks look to gear up for a championship run that none of them will ever forget.
